Mentor
Looking for a Deaf Mentor?
For more than twenty years, I have worked with a variety of families with deaf and hard of hearing children. Since 2003, I have worked in Early Intervention as a Deaf Mentor, providing support and information to families in Illinois. I also serve on the board of Hands & Voices and Illinois Hands & Voices, a parent-driven organization dedicated to providing non-biased support to families with deaf and hard of hearing children.
As a deaf mom of three deaf and hard of hearing children, I tackle questions both about my own journey growing up hard of hearing/becoming deaf and the parenting road. If there’s one lesson my children have taught me is that each child is different and there are such a wide variety of factors that go into decision-making for each of them.
I am available for 45-minute sessions that can be done via phone, Skype, ooVoo, videophone or Instant Messaging. Each Deaf Mentoring session is time devoted to you and your family. Deaf Mentoring can include:
- Questions about growing up hard of hearing/becoming deaf
- How to advocate for your child/teach your child to advocate
- How to identify and minimize social bluffing
- How to foster a positive deaf/hard of hearing identity for your child
And anything else you’d like to discuss!
Deaf Mentoring time can also be used to explore communication choices in a safe, non-biased manner. My own strong belief is that no child should go without language–and as Kathy Buckley says, “Every child should be able to communicate what’s in their heart.”
